The 10th A•DEvantgarde Festival opened on June 14th with a concert dedicated to Canadian New Music. The theme of the 2009 festival is Spielend, meaning playing with ease.  With this theme in mind, works from Canadian composers have been commissioned including new works from BC composers Rodney Sharman and Jeffrey Ryan, Quebec composer Michel Gonneville and Ontario composer Paul Frehner.  The concert concluded with Michael Oesterle’s Annus Mirabilis in an arrangement for Aventa Ensemble. Further information: http://www.adevantgarde.de

"...it is vital, angular music, which the superb Canadian ensemble Aventa, under the direction of Bill Linwood, implemented with precision" - Sueddeutsche, München

"Moritz Eggert's "Pong", based on the computer tennis game, earned an enthusiastic response from the crowded auditorium in the Black Box of the Munich Gasteig.

With the premiere of Paul Frehner's "God save the human cannonball" was a effective prelude to Munich's A•DEvantgrade Festival 10. The Montreal composer looked to the festival's motto "playing" with the phenomenon of ecstasy, as in the amusement park rollercoaster. The dizzying feeling linked with the compulsion to repeat it as often as possible were brought to full effect, thanks to an uncommonly compelling interpretation of the 15 member Aventa Ensemble under the direction of Bill Linwood." - B5 Kultur, München

"What does adding another 25 minutes contribute to our perception of the music? We could say it offers a more encyclopedic picture of the material's potential...including much new horn writing beautifully realized by Darnell Linwood...but it wouldn't embrace what is most remarkable about the expansion...Listen to Dérive II, 2007, and you know that there is no limit to "continual expansion." You've had a glimpse of infinity, and lo and behold, it's a nice place to be." - Elissa Poole OPUS

On This Planet

May 18, 19, 2007 8:00PM MacPherson Playhouse Theatre
On This Planet - Anders Nordentoft

Thomas Sandberg, The Male / Heather Pawsey, Mother Earth /Aventa Ensemble, Bill Linwood, conductor / Gwen Dobie, Stage Director / Michael Meloche, Stage Design / William Mackwood, Lighting designer

Danish composer Anders Norderntoft's opera, On This Planet, is a journey through life from birth to death. Anders' experience as a rock musician combined with his classical training, creates a brand new musical universe where the concept of crossover is no longer adequate as a label. In On This Planet, we enter a world where anything can happen and nothing is what is seems. Danish performance artist, Thomas Sandberg, joined Aventa Ensemble in the North American premiere of this opera.

Anders Nordentoft's On This Planet receives North American premiere

On This Planet received its North American premiere on May 18, 2007 at Victoria's MacPherson Theatre. Danish performance artist, Thomas Sandberg, joined Aventa Ensemble in the North American premiere of this opera.

"On This Planet is a great musical, dramatical and theatrical experience. Friday's premiere was a magnificant achievement...like life itself.

On This Planet, is all-encompassing, simultaneously all too brief yet seemingly eternal.

Thomas Sandberg...was mesmerizing...no doubt one day somebody else will take on this role, but at the moment it is hard to imagine". - Deryk Barker (Music in Victoria)

Don't be Afraid

Photography by Rob Destrubé Photography copyright AVENTA

The spectacularly strange performance was topped by an impressive and elaborate set, which included giant moving brick walls, gears, a sand-covered stage and a large mask-like head with a man's face projected on it. David Lynch would have drooled... for those who love opera, musical theatre, a live rock concert and anything out of the ordinary, On This Planet is a rare experience that is not to be missed." - Sarah Petrescu (Times Colonist)

"Nordentoft has created his own language from pre-existing vocabularies. His orchestra is capable of making very loud and violent sounds, but also of great beauty...in an orchestra pit bristling with microphones and electronics, Bill Linwood directed a performance on tremendous energy and subtlety". - Deryk Barker (Music in Victoria)
